Searching for your first dance song is super important for a lot of couples. And unless you’ve had the song picked out for years, it can be daunting sorting through Spotify to find that perfect one. When I was planning my own wedding, I spent hours browsing through playlists, reading a million lists, and even taking the questions to Reddit in search of a non-traditional song. Choosing the perfect first dance song seems like it should be an easy wedding planning task, but it can actually be more challenging than it looks. While having a wide variety of music right at your fingertips is a great thing, it can also feel quite overwhelming.
Your first dance song accomplishes a few things – it can set the tone for the reception, it can invoke emotions from your guests, and it’s the starting celebration point after you just exchanged “I do’s”. Here are a few thought starters as you brainstorm the perfect first dance song for you and your partner:
You want to consider the mood you are setting. Are you go sweet and soft? Or maybe happy and cheerful? Or maybe stick with the romantic vibe? There are so many avenues you can take on the musical direction – and this can help point you in the direction. For me, we wanted to do something that was a little upbeat, romantic and jazzy. We ended up choosing “A Kiss to Build a Dream On” by Louis Armstrong.
Sometimes you may have that special song that you two have always enjoyed listening to. Or maybe it was the song playing during your first date or first kiss. It’s easy to feel connected to a song like this – and it can help your guests connect too.
Another idea could be choosing a song that comes from a favorite movie or show. Or maybe it’s a cover of your favorite non-slow dance song. Movies and films play tons of music favorites – and it’s easy to pull from something that you both love together.
Your first dance song will be something you remember for years to come. Every time you hear it, you can be instantly transported back to your exciting wedding day.
